Julius Caesar apparently once said “I love treason but hate a traitor” My feelings with regard to a birding-related topic are similar – I love owls but hate owling. For some reason, it seems that getting older means liking the daytime more and nighttime less (at least in my case). Obviously, for watching owls, this is a problem. At Danzhou Bay on Hainan, there are several nocturnal owls that are worth seeing.

To say that an update of John MacKinnon’s “A Field Guide to the Birds of China” (2000) has been highly anticipated by birders interested in Chinese birds is almost an understatement. While there are some decent Chinese-language guides, they are of limited use for (local) illiterates like me. The 2000 MacKinnon guide is showing its age while my preferred choice for the Shanghai area, Mark Brazil’s “Birds of East Asia”, covers non-Chinese locations such as Japan

Having received so much rain recently in Broome we were keen to see what had happened to the parched dry land out of town in recent weeks. Last week I showed you what the highway looked like heading across Roebuck Plains. Last Sunday we drove out to the Roebuck Roadhouse and then travelled towards Derby to see what that land looked like. As we had expected it was very green rather than parched and the Boab trees are now covered in leaves and are hardly recognisable.

So there I was, less than half an hour into my second formal outing for February, on the Ejido Triquillo (eh-HEE-do tree-KEE-yo) dirt road. I was wishing I had a birding buddy with me as a mixed flock overwhelmed my abilities. Suddenly, a large bird, which seemed to have a bright yellow breast and black head, flew overhead to a point behind multiple branches.
