Costa Rica is more than cloud forest with mega worthy quetzals, more than rainforest with fancy Keel-billed Toucans and luscious Green Honeycreepers. Those are certainly two of several birdy habitats in this bio-wonderland. They are places where we invest most of our birding time and rightly so; mature tropical forests are where we find the highest number of species.

After testing both Swarovski NL Pure 10×42 and 12×42, I – a self-confessed lover of smallish full-size binoculars, felt the urge to try the latest 32 mm NLs. For most of my birding life, I birded with 8s, and with NLs and their extreme wide-angle field of view I found myself in a dilemma: should I stick to 8s and gain a 20% wider FOV, or should I keep the FOV I am used to and am happy with, but gain some extra magnification?
eBird Trip Reports were introduced relatively recently, in December 2021. A Trip Report is a way to separate out a group of checklists within certain dates to obtain a comprehensive single-page summary, including the number of checklists submitted, number of species observed, number of lifers, and a map. I have found Trip Reports a useful way to organize checklists from birding trips.
As I mentioned last week, upon my return last month from California, where I had birded a couple of hours each day, I was ready for a bit of a break. Oh, no, I didn’t stop birding entirely. That would be absolutely crazy. But I did pick easier targets during the first two weeks. My first post-trip outing was my least ambitious: I went to the natural area that begins just on the other side of the neighborhood in which we live, Los Filtros Viejos Canyon.
Sacred Kingfishers are observed more easily around the townsite of Broome during our winter months and I have been observing them close to home for a few weeks now. We have been lucky enough to have one in our garden over the last few days and it carefully balanced on our pretend power line. At the moment we are still experiencing cold chilly mornings with a requirement to wear socks for a change!

As you have probably realized by now, in my posts on 10,000 Birds, I generally scrupulously avoid giving any practical hints for birding at the specified location. This post on the Fuzhou National Forest Park is no exception – however, there is an older post of mine on Shanghaibirding which covers a few practicalities.
