Baby Bird Identification: A North American Guideā€“A Book Review

10,000 Birds

Everyone loves baby birds; 10,000 Birds even had a Baby Bird Week once upon a time! Baby birds are cuteness personified, possibly even more so than other baby animals, including human babies, and pose interesting questions of survival and development. So, I was intrigued when I saw that Comstock Publishing, an arm of Cornell University Press, was publishing Baby Bird Identification: A North American Guide by Linda Tuttle-Adams.

Why You Should Make Friends with Biologists

10,000 Birds

Way back in 2014, when I saw my first Chestnut-sided Shrike-Vireo near the little town of Pino Real, and shared the sighting on a birders’ chat group, it took just over a month for the first biologist/ornithologist to visit me. It seems he had looked long and wide for this species. Happily, I was able to show him three individuals that day. And after all, who wouldn’t want to see this beauty?

A Christmas surprise in Broome

10,000 Birds

Our Christmas Day in Broome was much like any other Christmas day in that we did a bird list for the day. We usually expect to see over one hundred bird species around the local area during the day and this year was no different. However, we had a beautiful surprise put on by Mother Nature, which really started our day off well. We had a walk around our local area to start our list after putting a few bird species on from our garden whilst we had a coffee.

The Reptilian Interloper

10,000 Birds

I would say it was just another mundane morning at the treatment ponds in SW Tobago – but this wouldn’t be true no matter how convenient the framing would be to set the stage for this post. Several migratory species were around – I’ll touch on these in a subsequent post – but all was quiet and calm nevertheless. Ducks and grebes paddled around, Anhingas swam beneath the surface, occasionally appearing with a skewered fish.

Some common birds of Shennongjia, China

10,000 Birds

The photos in this post were taken in 2015 and 2016 – I was not only an amazingly attractive, almost young person then, but also a surprisingly bad photographer. I also only managed to see rather common bird species at Shennongjia, a nature reserve in Hubei province, China. If this does not put you off from reading this post, you are hopeless anyway, so just proceed … The Brown-breasted Bulbul might well be the most common bird at Shennongjia, so it seems appropriate to start with it
