Despite what some outdated sources claim, the list of bird species reported for Costa Rica is much more than 860. Since the 1990s, thanks to higher numbers of observers, increased pelagic coverage, and some species expanding their ranges from the north and the south, the official bird list for Costa Rica has climbed to a robust 920 plus species. Southern Lapwing is a “new” addition that has become quite common.
In February 2022, the Collaborative submitted 127 checklists in 7 countries ( Costa Rica , United States , Mexico , Trinidad and Tobago , United Kingdom , and Serbia ). The 2022 year list stands at 888 and the life list is now at 4,112. The new additions to the life list were: White-tailed Sabrewing ; Rufous-vented Chachalaca , Blue-backed Manakin , Venezuelan Flycatcher , and Japanese Cormorant.
As I write weekly for 10,000 Birds, and it has now been two whole years since the pandemic has kept me from birding more than an hour away from home, it has become a challenge to come up with varied blog subjects. But every birding enthusiast knows that each year arrives full of possibilities. I imagine that the first months of each year can be a bit slow for those in colder climes, but down here, that year list can really grow quickly!

Well, summer is over! However, that does not mean that our wet season is over! We can expect more rain over coming weeks and the past week has seen more rain fall around the regions. Tropical Cyclone Anika became a rain bearing depression over the past week. It came into our region dumping enough rain to close the highway south across Roebuck Plains for a while and also restrict travel north to high clearance vehicles.
A while back, I wrote several guest posts for 10,000 Birds and Mike and Corey asked if I wanted a regular monthly space. After pondering whether I had enough time and ideas, I said yes. Somehow, that was five years ago. Approximately 70 posts later, I’m still here, though it is an open question whether I had enough ideas. Nevertheless, five years seems a good time to reflect on the blogging experience.
