10,000 Birds

The thickly forested central region of the island of Trinidad isn’t often visited by birders who traditionally flocked to the Northern Range by virtue of the Asa Wright Nature Centre (which is still closed in case you were wondering); the furthest south one may have ventured on a weeklong sojourn likely would be the mudflats of Waterloo on the west coast.

The Secret Perfume of Birds: Uncovering the Science of Avian Scent–A Book Review

10,000 Birds

Do Brown-headed Cowbirds really smell like freshly baked sugar cookies? Do Dark-eyed Juncos really smell like leaves and dirt or “ferns and Celestial Seasonings’ Country Peach Passion Tea? Give, and it shall be given unto you

10,000 Birds

Down here in Mexico, many of the longest life lists belong to full- or part-time birding guides. Now, I’m no professional, but I am more than happy to take people to meet the wonderful birds of this country’s southwest. Broome’s Pied Oystercatchers are breeding again

10,000 Birds

Well, it is that time of year again and shorebirds are breeding. The header photo shows the brighter colour of the legs and bills of the Pied Oystercatchers during the breeding season.

Birding the Kruger Park (3): Malelane area

10,000 Birds

I usually do not write much about traveling to and from birding places but my friend and I arrived in Malelane in the afternoon. We had been driving through Eswatini (Swaziland) for a few hours during the day, coming from Ndumo. Eswatini must have the worst paved roads I have ever experienced. It also is the country with the highest rate of HIV infections in the population (26.8%), though these two things are not necessarily related.

Birding Shanghai in July 2022

10,000 Birds

After returning once more from Nanhui and almost admiring the extent of ongoing destruction there, what better song to start this blog post than with excerpts from the song “Give up” by The Burning Hell? Unfortunately, I could not find a working link to a studio version of the song (only to some live versions which I am afraid to say do not quite do it for me), so instead, I will quote a bit more from the lyrics than I usually do, hoping that the band will not mind: “So though
