In July 2011 a Henslow’s Sparrow was found in Ames, N.Y., a rural area in the eastern-central part of the state. Although Henslow’s had been reliably found in nearby Sharon Springs for many years, the last documented sighting was in 2008, and the sighting startled longtime birders, waking them up to the fact that breeding sites in the state were rapidly being lost.

I haven’t watched nightly news in a while, actually, never really watched it as a kid either. However, I remember it, even if not for any of the news items. As a kid, I had more important things to think about than local happenings being divulged by someone in a suit. If a reporter would have rambled on about fishing or bird migration or the biggest, oldest trees in the area, I would have been all ears but no, I don’t recall any reporting on such esteemed subjects as those.

We try to make a trip to Geikie Gorge each year to go bush-walking and birdwatching, but the area is only open for a few months each year. Typically the area is open from around April to October, but this can vary a lot due to flooding rains or bushfires. Last year we were able to visit in May , but this year we had not been able to visit until this last weekend.

Tonight I’m going to fly to the magical kingdom of Costa Rica, to reset and restart at Rancho Naturalista. This lodge has the longest checklist among the eBird hotspots of Costa Rica – over 55 % of the nation’s total, including about 40 hummingbirds. Five years ago, I spent a day there and met Lisa Erb, the manager and owner, but also a former bird guide.
