The 1st edition from 1999 was a complete revolution in just about everything, but predominantly the quality and realism of illustrations, showing what a field guide could be and seriously raising the threshold for other publi

Galápagos: A Natural History, Second Edition–A Book Review

10,000 Birds

I did not prepare properly when I went to the Galápagos. Reading over my email from that period, I can’t believe I ended up there at all–I was working on a chaotic project at work, the economy was in crisis (well, the economy is always in crisis, but this was the summer of 2011, as in Black Monday crisis), and the tour itself was not confirmed till two months before the start date.

We typically celebrate sightings and not a change in air temperature or moisture content. Here in the tropics, our seasons do not exhibit such extreme variations as higher latitudes (in either direction) do. There are no sudden swings in temperature of 20 or 30 degrees – but there are subtleties to be appreciated by the keen observer.

Birding Nonggang, Guangxi, China – part 1

10,000 Birds

Nonggang is a rural place in Guangxi with a nice landscape somewhat reminiscent of coastal Northern Vietnam (well, it is not too far away). One of the reasons for birders to come here is to see the Nonggang Babbler. The Nonggang Babbler ‘s claim to fame is having only been discovered in 2008 (as a meaningless reference, it should be added that the first iPhone was released in 2007, one year earlier).
