As the Purple Swamphen awoke one morning from uneasy dreams, it found himself transformed into a Grey-headed Swamphen. It must indeed have been a bit kafkaesque for a bird that is clearly primarily purple to wake up one morning, see itself in the mirror and learn that it is now a Grey-headed Swamphen. The Purple Swamphen now is considered a superspecies, with each of its six races are designated full species – and in the strange world of birding, a superspecies is rather less than a specie
Author: Brian Trautschold As a new hire, structured training and onboarding programs are expected. Today, it is rare to see a company that doesn’t have a strict training program in place from the moment a new hire walks through the door. Hiring and onboarding are an expensive undertaking, so companies are incentivized to train new sales reps quickly and ramp faster.

As I mentioned last week, 2021 is getting off to a bit of a slow start. You might imagine this is because of pandemic restrictions, but actually, that hasn’t been a big problem, as long as I keep my birding local. Instead, the problem seems to be the cumulative effects of two years of insufficient rains here. As I result, January gave me my slowest start for Michoacán in four years, as far as my number of species is concerned.
The global pandemic and resulting social distancing dystopia triggered by novel coronavirus affected virtually everyone on Earth, but not all in the same way. Many lost lives, while others lost livelihoods. Even that corner of existence where birds meet watchers that so many of us like to spend time in felt the impact of COVID-19 in a few big ways: Birds carried on as always, perhaps even better than usual thanks to the wane in travel and resulting emissions.

Cold is subjective. At least how a person feels about temperature. It’s true! I have heard many people in Costa Rica mention the freezing cold weather, or how cold it is… when it’s 65 degrees. If I had grown up only knowing warm, humid weather, I would feel the same. But I didn’t grow up in the tropics. As much as I dig the biodiversity, experiencing the constant production and growth and profusion of life at all levels, I grew up in much colder places.

Hello all from Las Terrazas de Dana Boutique Lodge & Spa in Mindo Cloud Forest, Ecuador.
Last week I introduced you to the Kimberley Flycatcher – Microeca tormenti. This species is easier to find in Derby than Broome and the Derby wharf is a good place to go and observe them. The Kimberley Flycatcher had previously been a sub-species of the Lemon-bellied Flycatcher , but is now a species in its own right as of August 2019. The significant visible difference between the Lemon-bellied Flycatcher and the Kimberley Flycatcher is the lack of “lemon” colour in the Kimber

Author: Manoj Kumar The new year comes with all the anticipation and hope one can muster. The pandemic year has left many business leaders in a state of “what next?”. While there was widespread business and economic disruption among other kinds of disruptions in our daily lives last year, 2020 was actually the year of doing business online. If research and the numbers are to be believed, last year saw a growth that could only be compared to the accumulated growth of the past 10 years before it!

Here are some of the questions that were running through my mind as I read Owls of the Eastern Ice: A Quest to Find and Save the World’s Largest Owl : (a) Is ornithological research always this dangerous? (b) Who will play author Jonathan C. Slaght in the film version? (because, if the film rights to this book have not been snapped up yet, Hollywood is making a huge mistake) (c) Will I ever see a Blakiston’s Fish Owl?

In contemplating a title for this blog post, I vacillated between historical and geological references. Then it hit me that the name of the island itself is rather exotic sounding. Chacachacare (pronounced shaka-shaka-reh ) is the westernmost of the Bocas islands off the northwestern tip of Trinidad. Accessible by boat only, it takes about half an hour to get there from mainland Trinidad.
