Everything was frozen solid and pack ice was floating down the Danube. Hiding from the elements at the riverbank, I was sitting in a Yugo and staring at the murky sky. Whenever the windscreen got frozen, I could not afford to turn the engine on due to petrol shortages (during the UN embargo on the import of fuel to the former Yugos

There should be a good number of hummingbirds and quetzals are waiting in the mountains. It’s 2023 already and I have already started this year of birding.
Eighteen months ago, I wrote about a particular passion project of mine, which is to create a mini-forest on part of our church’s one acre of land. One of the best indications that we are going to get rain is that our pink Storm Lilies start to flower. The flowers above are Zephyranthes grandiflora and they are a small bulb that flowers when the air pressure drops. It doesn’t matter how much water you give them to encourage flowers, because a storm is required before they flower. We also have white Rain Lilies Pancratium zeylanicum that also depend on the air pressure changing to flower.
Napo is a county in the West of Guangxi, bordering both Yunnan and Vietnam. It is about 3 hours by car from Nanning airport, which in turn can be reached from Shanghai in a 2.5-hour flight.
