When the new NL 10x and 14×52 mm binoculars were announced by Swarovski, even though I find this series a bit oversized for my tastes, I was still curious about the 10s. I mean, which birder uses 14s? Do you know anyone using such a high magnification? Exactly, neither do I.

-Sorry about any formatting issues I am posting from mobile- -Delete if not allowed but I figured people would like insite into shelter life- As the title states, I am an animal shelter employee. I work both in the shelter and in the low cost vet clinic we have on site for both public and shelter animals. My issue isn't with where I work or the type of work I do, my issue is with the stigma that animal shelters have.

The vast majority of Palaearctic birds have now finished breeding and are either heading south, dispersing locally or going into moult. Many of the birds now heading south are in a terrible state, ready to drop the old feathers and replace them with new ones. Some start the moult, then pause it in order to migrate and complete it in the winter quarters.

That bird to me is a symbol of where I come from as a birder. But then there is the Green-bearded Helmetcrest, the most iconic species at the Sumapaz paramo birding hotspot.

We were travelling to historic Cape Race, when we encountered a traffic jam. Four Woodland Caribou were trotting along in the middle of the road. That is not what we expected to see, as our guide took us to the most south-easterly corner of Newfoundland in early July 2018. We were out to find Willow Ptarmigan and seabirds.

The prospect of encountering birds is what makes us get up early in the morning and leave the comforts of our homes to venture out into nature’s wilds and wilderness. Once we are there and surrounded by a world of wonders, we do what we do best: find birds.

One of the first birds I remember seeing was a Green Woodpecker. It had landed on our neighbours’ lawn, and I was invited round to see it. I was only five at the time, but already fascinated by birds and the proud possessor of my own copy of The Observers’ Book of Birds.

My outside cat has contracted/developed fleas big time this summer. Normal monthly flea treatment seems to be doing nothing so I bought her a flea collar (yesterday). This morning I found a flea on me beside my bed - cat does not come this far into our house so they're extreme. I'm not ok with these mfs and want them gone. Apart from bombing my house (which I'll probably do in the coming week) how can I get rid of them on her?

As title says, husband and I were in kitchen when we saw something fall. Turns out it was a baby squirrel. We placed some cardboard down so they wouldn’t fall through the cracks. The birds must spread good word about the feeders we have out. Anyways, mama came and sniffed him out a couple of times but hasn’t taken him back wherever the nest is. Put out some logs to make a bit of a hut for him since the wall does have a bit of a crevice he can hide in.

Ok so about 9 years ago (location was Georgia, north of Atlanta) I was at a friend’s house and it was like 3 am when we decided to go outside. We just stepped out on the porch and brought his chihuahua dog and sat on the bench. Now he lived in a duplex, and basically the doors were facing each other so there was a small concrete slab between them. To the right was the big driveway parking area the houses shared and on either side were big ass hedgerows.

I'll go first. Orcas. They're frighteningly intelligent, but use that intelligence to toy with their prey before shredding them to pieces. They act all kind-hearted with humans, but are awful to other animals. The only orcas I have any sympathy for, are the ones in places like Sea World. Other than them, burn the ocean down.

Hey everyone, I recently told a friend how dumb koalas are and what else there is wrong with them and he had no idea. After telling some more friends I found out that this is something most people have no clue of so I wanted to share, haha. Here to my reasoning: The obvious point for their stupidiy is that they have one of the lowest brain to body mass ratios of any mammal.

My sweet dog has an aggressive form of carcinoma (transitional cell carcinoma) and treatment is very expensive due to the inoperable location of the cancer. Any support is appreciated even sharing his story. He is my world and it’s horrible seeing him in pain and discomfort, this treatment should give him much more quality of life and time with us. (before reading, the cat mother is well and healthy along with the five kittens, so don't see this as a sad content. More as a question or discussion.) When mother cat loves it's kitten to a point she is more than willingly to scratch the living life of another animal if they approached her kitten. At our house we have a mother cat that stays outside of our door (or even chill next door) for food, even letting the five kittens live rent free.
