Testing the new NL 14x52s by Swarovski

10,000 Birds

When the new NL 10x and 14×52 mm binoculars were announced by Swarovski, even though I find this series a bit oversized for my tastes, I was still curious about the 10s. I mean, which birder uses 14s? Do you know anyone using such a high magnification? Exactly, neither do I.

Off My Chest : A Disgruntled Animal Shelter Employee

Reddit Animals

-Sorry about any formatting issues I am posting from mobile- -Delete if not allowed but I figured people would like insite into shelter life- As the title states, I am an animal shelter employee. I work both in the shelter and in the low cost vet clinic we have on site for both public and shelter animals. My issue isn't with where I work or the type of work I do, my issue is with the stigma that animal shelters have.

The Queen’s Falcon

10,000 Birds

The vast majority of Palaearctic birds have now finished breeding and are either heading south, dispersing locally or going into moult. Many of the birds now heading south are in a terrible state, ready to drop the old feathers and replace them with new ones. Some start the moult, then pause it in order to migrate and complete it in the winter quarters.

Bird Guides of the World: Luis García Cuartas, Colombia

10,000 Birds

What is your favorite bird species? A tough question! As you start birding, you also start to form a clear list of your favorite birds in your mind, such as the Black-backed Grosbeak. That bird to me is a symbol of where I come from as a birder. But then there is the Green-bearded Helmetcrest, the most iconic species at the Sumapaz paramo birding hotspot.

“Space for Birds” — a book review

10,000 Birds

Dr. Roberta L. Bondar’s handsome new book of photographs, Space for Birds: Patterns and Parallels of Beauty and Flight, comes in two halves, but it has several subjects and multiple viewpoints. Part One of the book concerns the Lesser Flamingo, which has, Dr. Bondar observes, four separate wild populations in the world, in Africa and western India and Pakistan.

Birding the Rock – aka Newfoundland, Canada

10,000 Birds

We were travelling to historic Cape Race, when we encountered a traffic jam. Four Woodland Caribou were trotting along in the middle of the road. That is not what we expected to see, as our guide took us to the most south-easterly corner of Newfoundland in early July 2018. We were out to find Willow Ptarmigan and seabirds.

Hongbenghe, a small village right at the border of China’s Yunnan province and Myanmar, has a number of woodpeckers. And most birders (though not all – see here for an exception) quite like woodpeckers, making it a good topic for a dedicated post.

Two weeks ago, I wrote here about what may end up being my Bird of the Year for 2024: a Lesser Ground-Cuckoo which gave us fantastic views in my beloved town of Paso Ancho, Michoacán. This sighting was so exciting for me (seriously, you have to check out this bird’s face), that I dedicated the entire post to that one bird.

High level negotiations

Just the other day we had an extensive lunch with my Mozambican in-laws. To make things even better, a family member I had not yet met (after close to four decades of marriage) joined us. The reminiscing started. My in-laws had stayed after independence – being more African than Portuguese to start with and not having any connection to metropole Portugal other than the language.

My 10 favourite Side Quests while Birding

10,000 Birds

We are birders. All of us are, or we wouldn’t be meeting here on 10,000 Birds quite so frequently. Birds rule our world. The prospect of encountering birds is what makes us get up early in the morning and leave the comforts of our homes to venture out into nature’s wilds and wilderness. Once we are there and surrounded by a world of wonders, we do what we do best: find birds.

How to get rid of fleas?

Reddit Animals

My outside cat has contracted/developed fleas big time this summer. Normal monthly flea treatment seems to be doing nothing so I bought her a flea collar (yesterday). This morning I found a flea on me beside my bed - cat does not come this far into our house so they're extreme. I'm not ok with these mfs and want them gone. Apart from bombing my house (which I'll probably do in the coming week) how can I get rid of them on her?

Baby squirrel fell from top of building and landed on our fire escape

Reddit Animals

As title says, husband and I were in kitchen when we saw something fall. Turns out it was a baby squirrel. We placed some cardboard down so they wouldn’t fall through the cracks. The birds must spread good word about the feeders we have out. Anyways, mama came and sniffed him out a couple of times but hasn’t taken him back wherever the nest is. Put out some logs to make a bit of a hut for him since the wall does have a bit of a crevice he can hide in.

What Kind of Animal Stands Just Outside your Light and Watches you Still-ly and silently?

Reddit Animals

Ok so about 9 years ago (location was Georgia, north of Atlanta) I was at a friend’s house and it was like 3 am when we decided to go outside. We just stepped out on the porch and brought his chihuahua dog and sat on the bench. Now he lived in a duplex, and basically the doors were facing each other so there was a small concrete slab between them. To the right was the big driveway parking area the houses shared and on either side were big ass hedgerows.

What is one animal you genuinely hate?

Reddit Animals

I'll go first. Orcas. They're frighteningly intelligent, but use that intelligence to toy with their prey before shredding them to pieces. They act all kind-hearted with humans, but are awful to other animals. The only orcas I have any sympathy for, are the ones in places like Sea World. Other than them, burn the ocean down.

The stupidity of koalas

Reddit Animals

Hey everyone, I recently told a friend how dumb koalas are and what else there is wrong with them and he had no idea. After telling some more friends I found out that this is something most people have no clue of so I wanted to share, haha. Here to my reasoning: The obvious point for their stupidiy is that they have one of the lowest brain to body mass ratios of any mammal.

What Topics/Species Would You Like to See Covered by a Wildlife-Focused Educational YouTube Channel?

Do mother cat fight better?

Reddit Animals

(before reading, the cat mother is well and healthy along with the five kittens, so don't see this as a sad content. More as a question or discussion.) When mother cat loves it's kitten to a point she is more than willingly to scratch the living life of another animal if they approached her kitten. At our house we have a mother cat that stays outside of our door (or even chill next door) for food, even letting the five kittens live rent free.
