African swine fever (ASF) has not entered the U.S. thanks to continuing efforts to prevent this deadly swine disease from reaching the country’s borders. However, ASF continues to affect swine herds globally, entering five new European countries in 2023. Countries have been forced to slaughter herds, ban imports on pig products, and implement greater biosecurity measures on farms.

Drs. Carol G. Ryan and Michael P. Lent were declared elected to the AVMA Board of Directors (BOD) in February after running unopposed for two open seats. Drs. Ryan and Lent begin their terms on the Board this June during AVMA Convention 2024 in Austin, Texas, and will serve until 2030.
