Our 9-day trip to Turkey in September was short, and it was not about birding. Even so, our short stay did allow me contact with a good number of habitats. The historic center of Istanbu l offered urban and coastal birds. The wetlands of Izmir’s bay were full of flamingos and other shorebirds. Several days later, I saw woodland birds in a forested valley.

Torresian Crows Corvus orru are the most common of the Crow family in the northern part of Australia and are the most likely of the Crow species that you will encounter. In Broome it is the only Crow species and we do not have Ravens , so it makes identification easy. If you go birding in more southerly regions you will encounter other Crow and Raven species and identification can then become more problematic.

In my last post I alluded to several goings-on that warranted separate posts. Although much has happened from then to now, the memory of a bird we observed on that day has remained with me. I had been tracking a Yellow-billed Cuckoo as it fed in the canopy when Joanne (my life and birding partner) drew my attention to an exceptionally dark heron hunting in a small waterway.
