The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on December 14 announced it has issued nine warning letters to manufacturers and distributors of unapproved and misbranded medically important antimicrobial animal drugs for violating federal law.

As mentioned in my previous post , we were hosted for an afternoon session at Jonathan ‘s farm. Coming off a high from our morning boat ride, excitement was high as we pulled into the farm compound. Being relatively close to the city is a bit misleading, as this may lead one to think that the area is devoid of life – but let this be a gentle reminder that Guyana is 85% forested!

As part of Governor Roy Cooper’s North Carolina Opioid Action Plan, a new law will require the state’s veterinarians to report the use of gabapentin even though it is not a controlled substance. HB 190 goes into effect March 1, 2024, for pharmacies and March 1, 2025, for veterinarians.

The pier in Ijmuiden, a coastal town west of Amsterdam, is a popular sea-watching site in the Netherlands as it allows one to get further out than from the beach. It is an excellent site in the winter months in particular, when seabirds including ducks, divers and grebes are quite reliable here. I’ve visited Ijmuiden once before, but due to strong wind the pier was closed during that visit.

Sunbirds are basically hummingbirds without any danger of Trumpism or MAGA ideology. And they think in meters and kilograms rather than in weird non-matching units such as feet and pounds. Apparently, convergent evolution has spared them from taking up these more unpleasant aspects of hummingbirds. So, not much that is not to like about hummingbirds, particularly as they also frequently perch (unlike hummingbirds), which makes the life of the bird photographer so much easier.

Though it’s more than 50 years since my first bird photograph was published, I’ve always remained a birdwatcher who photographs birds, not a photographer whose favourite quarry has feathers. The difference isn’t quite as subtle as it sounds, as I can enjoy enormously a great day out when I fail to take a single photograph, but for a photographer such a day would be a failure.
