They announced their candidacies on Friday, the final day of the regular annual session of the AVMA House of Delegates (HOD) in Austin, Texas.

I associate different times of the year with particular birds and bird movements. In some cases, I have been following these events since childhood and they have become a part of my life. One such period has just started and will continue into September. As the climatic conditions over the Mediterranean become stable in the summer months, the water column becomes very stratified and little nutrient and plankton gets to the surface.

So here is where we were a week ago in central Mexico: Some of the country’s most important and largest lakes, such as Lake Cuitzeo and Lake Yuriria, were completely dry. The island of Jantizio in the middle of Lake Pátzcuaro, famous for its Day of the Dead celebrations, was almost accessible by foot. I’m not sure if dredging the mostly dry lake still allows access by flat-bottom boats, which is the usual way to reach the island.

For me, it has come down to a choice between extroversion – flying – and introversion – invisibility. How to answer this question from a birder’s perspective? My hunch is that most birders are more on the introversion side of the whole spectrum, though I am sure there are many exceptions to this (hello Peter!).

Tan Phu Forest is about 2 hours North of Ho Chi Minh City, and the location of a few bird blinds set up by a Vietnamese who used to be a park ranger at Cat Tien National Park and probably learned about the economic potential of attracting foreign birders. I guess that it is easier to set up blinds here than in the national park – and many of the star birds are quite similar.
