February is supposed to be that boring month coming after the hyperactive January, when IWC takes place (non-American CBC). In the more normal years, I would spend January visiting the very best wildfowling spots along the Danube and seeing the best birds there are, so in February I would be well saturated with birds and feeling: Still winter? Gosh!

eBirders who enter checklists via the app automatically create an eBird Mobile Track that is attached to the checklist, though it is apparently only visible to the checklist submitter. The track appears in the upper left corner of the online checklist, and it has intrigued me since it started appearing. I recently birded the Tualatin River NWR near Portland, Oregon, and made that my test case for a deeper dive into the Mobile Track.

A couple of weeks ago I mentioned how we were all watching and waiting for our much needed wet season rain. The average annual rainfall for Broome is around 500mm and we receive that rainfall over a few months in the summer, which is right now. Last year we only received 338mm for the whole year, so we were hoping for a good bit of rain sooner or later.

“That loon looks weird,” I remarked to my mom. It certainly wasn’t the most eloquent phrase to ever fall from my lips, but it was true from my reference point. I exclusively see Common Loons , both in Maine – where I spent the holidays and into January – and at my home base in Florida. At first glance, the silhouette looked right for a loon, but something was…off.

Last week, I received an email from an American couple that has recently moved to Morelia; they found me right here on 10,000 Birds. (Fame suits me, I must humbly admit.) Although birding is not their first reason for moving here, they are enjoying meeting the lovely locals, such as the Broad-billed Hummingbird and Vermilion Flycatchers. I warned them that, impossible as it may seem, they will someday tire of seeing both here.
