My company has an office in Monterrey so my trip wasn’t the first time to this industrial city, nor will it be the last. My previous post on birding here has received some criticism – apparently I was too harsh on the place. Now, in early March, the city showed itself from its best side with clear skies and air pollution levels so low that only small children had to stay indoors.

More dairy cattle in Idaho, New Mexico, and Texas have tested positive for highly pathogenic avian influenza virus (HPAI). The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) announced April 1 and 2 that these mark the first known cases of HPAI in cattle in Idaho and New Mexico, and add to the two detections in Texas and two in Kansas that were announced on March 25.

With the first three months of the year now gone, it’s time for a review of my birding efforts so far this year. At the time of writing, my British year list stands at a modest but satisfactory 139, while my European list is on 173, thanks to a visit to southern Spain in February. The next couple of months will of course see a boost to my British list, as summer migrants flood into England, while forthcoming trips to Cyprus, Greece and northern Spain will also turbocharge the European list.

Two months ago, I wrote about seeing one of Mexico’s really special endemic birds: the Aztec Thrush. This bird beauty is quite subtle. But it is rare, well-camouflaged, not site-loyal, and almost always silent. It can only be found, as of this writing, in 594 eBird lists, which would place it high on most birders’ wish list. I live within the heart of its rather limited range, but until this year, had only seen this species three times.
