Continued from over the misty mountains cold. Off to lunch in the Savegre River Valley we go, known for Flame-coloured Tanager , Long-tailed Silky-flycatcher , Wren Thrush , Volcano Junco , Volcano and Fiery-throated Hummingbirds. Situated in misty, cool montane oak forest, the touristy hamlet of San Gerardo de Dota is the most popular birding area in Talamanca: it hosts the largest population of the Resplendent Quetzal in the world.

December is not the ideal month for bird counts, at least not in Costa Rica. Yes, we do have warm, tropical weather and a fancy assortment of resident and wintering species. Our relatively-recent trip to Spain and the Middle East was, as expected, a great opportunity to see new birds. In the end, it gave me 44 lifers: 10 from Turkey and 8 from Jordan, which I had not visited before, and 26 from Spain, which I had visited previously, but in which we spent much more time. Still, there were notable groups of birds which I could not see in the Old World.

This year, it seems I wrote one post on birding in Shanghai each month – and I am still not even sure anyone is interested in these. Maybe the topic is too bureaucratic or irrelevant? Comments are welcome. Probably the most interesting bird this month was a Grey-headed Canary-Flycatcher showing up in the Shanghai Botanical Garden. This bird is not rare at all further down south, but one would not expect it in Shanghai in mid-December.

With the end of the year approaching you could consider where you would like to go birding in Australia in 2023. As you well know we are a huge continent with many outlying islands and a huge variety of bird-life. Despite all of the dangers we have-snakes, spiders, crocodiles, deadly jellyfish, deadly fish, leeches, ticks, mosquitoes and then a pandemic-we still have a population of almost 26 million people.
