The Western Marsh Harrier

10,000 Birds

This is peak time for the migration of Western Marsh Harriers (Circus aeruginosus) across the Strait of Gibraltar. These birds are heading south-west, many of them crossing the Sahara Desert to wintering grounds in West Africa. Others will spend the winter months north of the desert, in Morocco and in the Iberian Peninsula, where they join the local residents.

Will bird books go the way of the Dodo?

10,000 Birds

I’m sitting writing this in my study, its walls lined with books on birds and natural history. However, a worrying thought has struck me: is the book as we know it doomed, destined to die out as surely as the Dodo and the Passenger Pigeon?

Kaapstad Critique

10,000 Birds

Cape Town or Kaapstad: I have a love-hate relationship with the town. Maybe that’s too strong, but I am not falling for the tourism bureau hype. For instance, I do not think it is a beautiful city. Its surrounding landscape is impressive, but the historical centre has been separated from the sea by an ugly port area.

Fall is for Raptors

10,000 Birds

Next to spring, my other eagerly anticipated season is the fall, highlighted by raptor migration. September 1 is when raptor lovers congregate around Toronto’s viewing hotspots. We check the weather forecasts for north-element winds, which bring the birds down to us from the boreal forests of Ontario and Quebec. Northwest winds are the best, which is when most of us raptor lovers head out.

Island Scrub-Jays on Santa Cruz Island

10,000 Birds

It is funny the lengths that some of us choose to go to see birds. You may have heard tales of “big year birders” or “big listers” flying across the country when a rarity shows up that they still need for whatever current list they are keeping. I always reflect on my luck when a Collared Plover showed up just before noon at a playa, which was a half-hour drive from my work in Mission, Texas.

Some Winter Passerines on Hokkaido

Preparing this post after just having returned from Sulawesi and Halmahera – where many species proudly wear their island location as part of their names – it is striking how comparatively cosmopolitan the passerines of Hokkaido are. In fact, while the flight distance between Kushiro on Hokkaido and Paris is more than 9000 km, many of the birds are exactly the same.

10 Things I Like About Birding

10,000 Birds

Of course, there are things that we hate about birding, as per Kai Pflug’s blog of August 15, 2024. But, I think there are so many pluses. Otherwise, why would we be getting up early, baking in the sun or shivering in the cold, to get that one special bird? 1. Spending time with the nice birders. These are the people, often far away, who share their tips about favourite spots.

Your fav dog picturebooks

Hey! I'm an owner to an amazing dog and I'm also a student of publishing studies. I wanted to research the presence of dogs in picturebooks or, even better, picturebooks about dogs. They can be about anything really, as long as the narrative is somehow related to dogs (the process of adoption, service dogs, puppy blues, abandonment, companionship, etc).

Cat brought in vole, healthy except for broken hind legs

Reddit Animals

Exactly as title says, in need of advice. Our cat has brought in a vole, and it's otherwise okay (eating, shuffling about, no longer terrified), but its hind legs don't work. As we have two cats I feel it unwise to keep and look after it, although possible, but taking it back outside feels very cruel. However, not sure I can bring myself to put it down as it really does look otherwise okay.

I was deciding what I am going to be for Halloween and decided on a crocodile and while I was researching what I need to make the costume and facts about crocodiles I thought that a crocodile would be a great soldier in the army for a couple of reasons.the first is that they can move easily through water and reach places humans can't.
