As we all know, butterflies like warmth and sunshine, so I didn’t expect to find many during my recent visit to Mallorca. I did manage to see nine species, which is nine more than I would have seen at home in England during the same period. Eight of these were butterflies I anticipated, such as Painted Lady, Red Admiral and Speckled Wood, but there was one big surprise: Monarch.

Here in the southern part of North America, it’s hard to come up with a family of birds that is more colorful than the New World warblers, also known as wood-warblers. Orioles and tanagers can match them for intensity of color, but not for variety. Only our hummingbirds and buntings surpass the New World warblers on both accounts.

Years back, I learned about Eagle Lakes Park in Naples from the Great Florida Birding Trail guide book. When I first visited, I had to walk past soccer fields and baseball diamonds. There was a water park, tennis courts, and a community centre. I wondered where the birding hotspot was to be found. Then, I arrived at the back of the park, with its three marshy ponds and tree-lined walkways.

On our first visit, we failed to visit one of the world’s top wildlife destinations, so on this trip, I sought to rectify that. Kruger National Park is massive—just over 7,500 sq miles, larger than some US states. Established in 1926, this park sees about 1,650,000 visitors each year.
