We had driven two hours north of Naples in Florida. We were at the correct park. We had a general idea of where to go, but would the bird be there? Then, I saw a group of people with their binoculars up, staring at the bushes. We were where we needed to be to see the rarity: Groove-billed Ani, which is usually found in Central America.

Sulawesi and Halmahera are only about 300 kilometers apart, but that distance is enough to give birders a completely different set of kingfisher species. For example, while Tangkoko on Sulawesi has beaches, it does not have the Beach Kingfisher that can be found on Halmahera. Apparently, it is closely related to the Collared Kingfisher common on Sulawesi, but it is much larger.

Here in eastern England, spring always arrives in fits and starts. We enjoyed some beautifully warm and sunny weather earlier in the month, but then the wind swung back to the north, bringing with it a nasty blast of arctic air. Winter made an return, though we were spared snow. This week started with sharp frosts, while the wind, now easterly, made the days feel very cold.

It’s been quite a week, with heavy rain and strong to gale force winds. I managed to get out in between the worst intervals and I never cease to be surprised at the way in which birds on migration seem to find gaps to get across. The big challenge here is crossing from North Africa to southern Europe and that involves crossing the sea.
