Into Guyana’s Interior

10,000 Birds

Although by this time we had already clocked around a hundred species after a day and a half in Guyana, we were understandably eager to explore the famous rugged interior of the country. The vastness of the place means not only that one is unable to visit in a single day – but getting there is a day in itself. Unless, of course, a small aircraft is involved.

Birding Senegal: Costco ads and Scissor-tailed Kites

10,000 Birds

Hannah Buschert started birding in college thanks to a required Biology of Birds course and a professor who included Sir David Attenborough’s Life of Birds to punctuate lessons. Almost as if by accident, Hannah landed the dream job of Park Ranger in the Rio Grande Valley at Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park where she guided many birders who filled her head with far-off destinations and incredible birds.

A New Logo

10,000 Birds

Sometimes marketing people wake up sweating, mostly after having nightmares about outdated logos and designs. While I am not a marketing person myself, even I got a slightly queasy feeling when looking closely at the old 10,000 Birds logo. Somehow, it appears to have been created in the times when computer monitors still had blinking yellow letters in front of a black background, and mobile phones still were the size of bricks.

Bird Day: A Story of 24 Hours and 24 Avian Lives–A Book Review

10,000 Birds

Bird Day is a lovely, little jewel of a book. The idea is to portray one bird for each hour of the day in words and art, presenting the diversity, beauty, and wonder of avian life. The partnership of its creators, ornithologist Mark E. Hauber and artist Tony Angell fulfills this goal beautifully and was the factor that motivated me to review this book.

My Favorite 2023 Birds

10,000 Birds

Well, 2023 has ended, so it’s time to look back at the past year’s birding. The pleasures of birding are many and varied, so this kind of post always involves a list. I will also return to several birds which have already appeared here.

Birding Tradition: the New Year’s Day List

10,000 Birds

Starting the New Year by trying to see as many species as possible is something of a birding tradition. One of my more memorable New Year’s days was in the Falkland Islands, back in 1989. My diary notes that the New Year dawned grey and windy, but I rose early, walked six miles before breakfast and noted a modest 26 species of birds. Like many offshore archipelagos, birds are few in variety on the Falklands, though many individual species are great in numbers.

Southern Bavaria in December

10,000 Birds

I was very glad to be able to spend the week of Christmas and the new year at the Tegernsee, a small lake in southern Bavaria, together with my family and my girlfriend. Although a few unexpected hick-ups occurred, such as significant travel delays (which have become the norm when using Germany’s trains) and positive Covid tests that prevented some family members from joining, it was refreshing to spend some time somewhere else, particularly in a scenic and relaxing environment like the Te
