Ask any British birdwatcher to name their least favourite birds and the chances are high that the Common Pheasant, Phasianus colchicus, will top the list. Here in Britain we never use the affix Ring-necked, as many of our Pheasants don’t have rings on their necks, but I am talking about the same bird that is known as the Ring-necked Pheasant in America.

Here in the UK it’s taken a long time for the purists to get used to Red Kites, which are now common and widespread throughout much of the country. In my last article I highlighted some of the birds that I associate with this time of the year. Two of them, Northern Gannet (Morus bassanus) and Sandwich Tern (Thalasseus sandvicensis) are species that are now wintering along the coasts of Gibraltar. We have had a spell of strong easterly winds and this pushed many seabirds inshore.

Well, the last post from California is here. Even though I was there for only 1,5 months I do feel like I had quite the opportunity to go around and explore this beautiful state. Besides working with birds at the Palomarin Field Station in Marin county I had the chance to visit Sierra Valley, Big Sur, Lassen NP, Humboldt county, and do plenty of exploring around Point Reyes National Seashore.

It is not true that voting is not allowed in China. I asked about 10 Chinese birders about the best Chinese provinces for birding and did not run into any problems whatsoever. So, here are the results. 1 – Yunnan (892 species on eBird) Yunnan has by far the largest number of bird species in China as its landscape and habitat include East Asia, Southeast Asia, and the Tibetan Plateau.

The Mediterranean island of Mallorca is one of those places where birding and non-birding hobbies can be combined with wonderful convenience. This is rather important to me when traveling with friends, as being able to record some interesting species without too much effort and still maximising the time I can share doing non-birding activities is tricky in places with low avian diversity.
