The full impact of the wildfires that ravaged central and western parts of the Hawaiian island of Maui, including the city of Lahaina, beginning on Aug. 8 have yet to be determined. Hawaii Gov. Josh Green, MD, said in an Aug. 13 briefing that the fires were the "largest natural disaster in Hawaii state history" and that 80% of the historic beach-front town had "gone.

Around Broome at the moment there are less shorebirds than at other times of the year due to the annual shorebird migration. Many of the migratory shorebirds will start to return to Broome in coming weeks and months. We all hope that they were able to breed successfully in the Northern Hemisphere and that they can find food throughout the Flyway to return to our shores.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) confirmed the registration and affirmed the safety profile of the Seresto flea and tick collar after a multi-year review. At the same time, the EPA is requiring Elanco Animal Health, maker of the Seresto collar, to implement additional measures that will guard against any potential incidents in the future.

The full scientific name of the Golden Pheasant is Chrysolophus pictus , with the “Chrysolophus” part meaning “with golden crest” while “pictus” means painted. That sounds like a sensible name, but then again, Lady Amherst’s Pheasant (the subject of an earlier post ) is also in the genus “Chrysolophus” despite not having a golden crest at all.
