Bird Watching and Photography in Central Park, New York.

10,000 Birds

Having been to New York City on many occasions, I had never had the opportunity to visit Central Park, all of my trips over the years were short, busy business trips. On this particular occasion, it would be different, I am now retired and my wife and I would be vacationing in NY, with no work commitments.

Texas mega-rarity

10,000 Birds

While visiting the city of Corpus Christi in Texas in November 2023, we were told about a rare bird in the heart of the downtown. We went to the area where it had been reported. We were standing in front of a restaurant. On the other corners were a parking lot, an office building, and a barren, cement-covered lot. Other birders joined us at the stakeout, as we wandered around the area.

The Cleopatra Bird

10,000 Birds

Some birds are especially exciting, because they are so hard to see. Others are unusually beautiful, or perhaps, just plain unusual. And a few are both. (When they actually afford you a whole new blog subject to write about, that is certainly an extra bonus.) For years, I had hoped to see a Lesser Ground-Cuckoo, one of Mexico’s more exotic and difficult species.

What is a birder?

10,000 Birds

There are two questions I get asked a lot. Do you take pictures of the birds you see? Are you a bird-watcher then? The answer to the first question is a resounding no. Shutting down one’s peripheral vision is not my idea of birding. Now you know why I go out without a camera , take horrible pictures but also make friends to allow me the use of their splendid pictures.

Birding Shanghai in July 2024

10,000 Birds

July is the least interesting month for birding in Shanghai – it is too hot, and there is pretty much no migration. A good month to go abroad and watch birds elsewhere, which I did (Indonesia). Still, due to the unofficial and cruel rules of a heartless blog editor (a German, of course), I have to write a post about birding Shanghai this month.

I was amused to read Sara Jentsch’s recent diatribe on gulls: Why I despise Seagulls: A Tale of Humiliation. It was encouraging to discover that it’s not just in Britain that these feathered urban terrorists swoop down on unsuspecting tourists to relieve them of their crêpes, ice cream or chips.

Why do people call smart animals dumb?

Reddit Animals

People have a tendency to confuse pigs, pigeons, dogs, gorillas, and monkeys dumb, and I don't understand it. Those are most of the animals called dumb and in reality they are very intelligent. It's not unlikely to hear the phrase "pigeon brain" or "I'm dumber than a monkey." Why do people have such a common misconception?

Why isn’t there more animal sh*t visible in the wild?

Reddit Animals

I’m not complaining, it’s just always seemed odd to me. Animals produce a lot of waste. Consider what you find when you clean your cat box, or cleaning up after your dog. Multiply that by thousands and that’s what we have populating our wild areas here in the North East of the US. Not to mention the size of many of these species. Sure, we see the occasional scat, but it’s never more than a spot or two.

Why are Moose so freaking big?!

Like there is no reason on this beautiful multi coloured planet that a DEER should be that big. A DEER, btw.
