Flight Identification of European Passerines and Select Landbirds

10,000 Birds

Since the 2nd edition of the Collins Bird Guide (published as “Birds of Europe” in the US) from 2009, the field guide market for European guides is practically dead. Knowing how good Collins 2 is and how high standards it has set, no publisher seems to dare to challenge them on the continental level (there are a few single-country guides, e.g. for Cyprus ).

However, I have another ongoing love affair, with India. If you have never thought of India as a birding destination, I’d urge you to give it a good look. From the alpine habitats of the Himalayas, to deserts, grasslands, wetlands and forests, India has a great deal to offer the birdwatcher.

Best Bird of the Weekend (Third of February 2021)

10,000 Birds

No time of year highlights the inadequacy of the calendar to describe seasons as much as this particular period in the upper latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere. We humans, being the environmental cue-driven, chronologically constrained creatures that we are, look out a frost-rimed window at a wasteland of ice and snow and think, “I cannot WAIT for winter to end.” Yet, response-driven creatures like birds look past little things like blizzards to appreciate how much later the sun se

Very Special Birds

10,000 Birds

When I got back into birding about six years ago, I would not have predicted the personal bonds a birder can form with certain species. While all birds bring us joy, and we certainly want to see as many as we can, some species just seem more… special. They are especially beautiful, rare, or hard to find. Or, perhaps, they hold a special place in our personal birding story.

The benefits of Billygoat Plum

10,000 Birds

The Terminalia species of tree is well known for its medicinal benefits in the north of Australia. Terminalia ferdinandiana is the most well-known of the species and the berries contain more vitamin C than other plants. The tree is also known as Gubinge or Kakadu Plum. We have chosen to grow a Terminalia petiolaris in our garden instead. It is an excellent shaped tree and requires little pruning and is a great source of food for the local bird-life.
