I was especially interested in “To Hide From God,” the chapter on songbird slaughter and protection in Cyprus. This is big, global-level stuff with amazing findings but worrisome data. Weidensaul, master nature writer, understands that the best way to communicate “big stuff” (my words, not his!)
Like cats, the rat was introduced over much of the world by humans. As for the former, diseases are spread by fleas, which also plague rats, which makes rats as much a victim as humans, and as for the latter, rats are clearly wildlife and how can wildlife be blamed for hurting wildlife? Rats are cute! Imagine a world without rats!
Encourage others to go vegan by educating them about the issues, and particularly about why we should not accept alternatives to eating animals that include eating animals (i.e., if they are "farmed" or slaughtered in a certain way). To my knowledge, there is currently no opportunity like this for vegan education.
The Humane Society of the United States is the big bully on this strange playground. Often confused with American Humane Association, they raise tens of millions, not to ‘save the animals’ as most people assume but to further the causes of vegetarianism and ending animal agriculture." The HSUS isn't even anti-hunting !
I do not believe that our war can be won by vegan education alone and that some day, the oppressors of humans, nonhuman animals and the planet are going to see the error of their ways and transition to a nonviolent, non-exploiting way of life. Why the guilt? Because I don't take enough of a stand. I am not a fundamentalist pacifist.
The University of Puerto Rico, an "1862" LGU founded in 1900, operates a slaughter facility killing small ruminants -- typically goats and sheep, cattle being large ruminants. We humans, herbivores like ruminants, are fine with one stomach -- we don't eat the really tough stuff like grass. Let me know if you hear the show!
In the majority of cases, it is humans who are to blame for the plunging numbers of animals, and Corwin is very clear about the extent to which we have destroyed the world around us. We can stop using animals and "allocate resources" to educate Homo sapiens worldwide to change their relationship to the animals around them.
As much as I don't like responding to comments that are hostile, they also demonstrate a lack of understanding/education/knowledge on the part of the commenter that perhaps, if remedied, might result in a different opinion. We are not ignorant of the exploitation of humans that often goes hand-in-hand with the exploitation of nonhumans.
The “Crow Down” is a “hunting contest” where both adults and children slaughter as many crows as they possibly can in two days. On the website he reminisces fondly about his “best hunt,” where he killed 3,125 crows in 9 days, bringing to mind the days when people slaughtered seemingly endless flocks of passenger pigeons and herds of buffalo.
Shorebird identification takes time and is often stressful, there’s heat glare and bugs and drones and dogs and humans. Kevin Karlson is a noted nature photographer, writer, tour leader, speaker, and workshop educator. But this does not mean I don’t love shorebirds.
The site says food production factories are included , but I doubt that means those involving the slaughter of animals.). If you're going to call something an anthropological adventure, it would make sense to teach the kids about the other animals humans eat and give the kids the opportunity to prepare and eat dog, cat and monkey, no?
Finding that decades of consumer education hasn’t slowed meat-industry growth or ecodestruction and that universities powerfully influence what people eat, RPA has been demanding that the colleges of agriculture at our LGUs stop forking over billions of dollars worth of training, research, and public relations to the meat industry.
Hunting sandhill cranes in the Eastern flyway will put those 100 whooping cranes at even greater risk of being brought down by gunfire, hunter education courses and handy color brochures notwithstanding. All of them had successfully learned the skills we taught them to forage in “safe&# areas and avoid humans. Quick: what’s this?
Both were led by strong, intelligent women who needed to develop new ways of making their points with the public and the government; both movements were lynchpins in developing today’s values of human rights and environmental conservation. and the Importation of Plumage (Prohibition) Act of 1921 in Great Britain).
To the Editor: Re “ Humanity Even for Nonhumans ,” by Nicholas D. If human beings were confined, mutilated and killed, would we call it “humane” if the cages were a few inches bigger, the knife sharper, the death faster? Would we say these people were slaughtered in a “people friendly” manner?
The Argument from Human Grain Shortage All of the clearly moral arguments for vegetarianism given so far have been in terms of animal rights and suffering. New moral vegetarianism, however, rests on moral arguments couched in terms of human welfare. Nobody wants existing animals to be slaughtered.
Farm animals also benefit from the humane farming movement, even if the animal welfare changes it effects are not all that we should hope and work for. Go vegan, go vegetarian, go humane or just eat less meat. If we all decide to consider animals as precious as humans, the only logical place for us is back in the jungle.
For Engber, who dispassionately describes procedures most of the time, the "advances" in the medical care of humans are all well worth what he and other vivisectionists do to dogs and other sentient nonhumans. By the end of my time as researcher, I was performing behavioral experiments on humans. It "guarantees humane treatment?"
We give them human names and provide them with the same amenities we enjoy as humans. He is letting his attachment to eating animals and his attachment to his constituents profiting from their slaughter cloud his decision making. We have a tendency as a society to anthropomorphize our animals, especially our pets.
