Why can’t a baby bird just hatch out of the egg and fly away, or at least, be able to fly a little and not require weeks of constant feeding and attention? In mammal species where there is an overproduction of offspring, it is not uncommon for one of the offspring to be underfed so it dies. This is different from mammals.

The featured image above shows a female incubating eggs from my first resident breeding pair back in 2007. Violet-green Swallows will nest solitarily or in colonies and in my experience seem much more mellow than other swallow species. The four to six eggs are white and unmarked. If I had known that these Amanita caesareas smell pleasantly of eggs, I would have taken a sniff. And while this poisonous species is usually red and spotted, older examples can lose their spots and take on an orange hue. Sometimes it is the experience that makes them memorable. It is my best bird because it is just such an incredible species, and looking at it made me realize that I had temporarily stopped to fully appreciate birds during the stressful last few years. The island contains 80,000 breeding Sooty Terns, in addition to 4,500 breeding Brown Noddies and another 100 breeding pairs of the huge Magnificent Frigatebirds, not to mention pelicans, herons, Black Skimmers , other tern species, and so much more. Sooty Terns are incredibly birds. Each took merely a minute or two.

This area offers Mexico’s greatest concentration of endemics, as well as very few species an American birder might have already seen up north.
