Rats had previously preyed on eggs and young of practically every defenseless seabird on the island, and had taken to even attacking adult albatross as they sat on their nests.
However, the factory farm system we have in any country does not lend itself to either of the two criteria. And if you ever drive around an egg farm, hog farm, slaughterhouse, feeding lot, etc., There are probably no happy animals in factory farming (ie. Factory animals are voiceless victims. big corporate agribusiness.)
The good news is that if you know someone who needs to be schooled on all of the sordid details of factory farming, and appreciates good writing, this is a great book. Update October 2024 – Brazil’s Environment and Sustainable Development Committee approved a bill to stop the killing of male chicks. Introduced by Congresswoman Luciene Cavalcante at Animal Equality’s request, the bill proposes using in-ovo sexing technology, which could save 84 million chicks each year.
It is well settled that a balanced diet of these foods provides the same essential amino acids that Nina Planck finds in an egg. I’ll leave the question of infant care to the physicians, but I know firsthand that an adult vegan can enjoy robust physical health without contributing to the cruel suffering of animals on today’s factory farms.
