On March 19, 2009 a company representative emailed Compassion Over Killing: "…I am pleased to let you know the BOCA brand will be eliminating eggs in all of its products by the end of this year. We anticipate all BOCA products will be egg free in 2010." They are striking a blow against the cruel egg industry.

Early April is a fairly typical time for the earlier-migrating Osprey to arrive (both birds at Dunrovin are already onsite,) but eggs probably won’t appear until late April or early May. While birding this weekend at Mason Farm, I spotted this pair of Gnatcatchers working on their tiny lichen and spiderweb cup in the crook of a broken Black Willow limb. They’re first brood are probably a couple weeks off still. The nest appeared to be almost complete, weeks before the real rush of neotropic migrants is set to arrive.

When we eat eggs we eat chicken eggs almost exclusively. Feral Chickens number in the thousands in Key West alone and that population has not been dented even as hundreds of birds are trapped and removed – in fact, in 2011 0ver 1,500 were captured and trucked to an organic farm in central Florida. Prop 2 requires that factory farms provide enough space for animals to stand up, turn around and extend their limbs. It applies to breeding pigs, egg laying hens and veal calves.

Speaking of pregnant snakes, do sea snakes lay their eggs ashore like sea turtles or do they keep them internally until the young are ready to hatch/ be born, like some sharks? These do lay eggs on land and are (reasonably) mobile once they hit the beach. It seems like there is great diversity in this continent.
