But, getting the nest set up, amorous acitivites, the laying and hatching of the egg, all that, happens earlier. But individual birds are not migrating sooner. They migrate every year almost exactly at the same time. Then, the birds migrate in relation to the earlier hatch date. Each generation of birds migrates a bit earlier than the last.

Eagle-eyed Pat spotted a Lesser Black-backed Gull in nonbreeding plumage and other birders that week noted a Thayer’s Gull (which we may have seen too–I mean, who expects Iceland Gull in April?). If I lived in High Island, I would go to the Rookery every evening to try to capture the essence of its chaotic wonderfulness.

Late this week I sorted through three hundred trying, unsuccessfully, to find the odd Iceland Gulls that turn up each year. Friends of mine came home from those lakes with tales of Sandhill Cranes , Snowy Owls with eggs in the nest and others.

A nest wasn’t found until 1903, which set off a craze for Kirtland’s Warbler skins, nests, and eggs. I say this not only because he is president of the Grosse Pointe Audubon Society and because his official bio says he “has traveled across North America and to Cuba, Iceland, and Thailand to view and research birds”.

Red Junglefowl by Mike Bergin Clare Kines chose an egg as his Best Bird of the Year. Stood high on a sea wall, north wind blowing strong in my face, scouring the dark sea, the occasional cries of Iceland, Glaucous and Herring Gulls as they dive past along with the unmistakeable smell of salt and fish locate me even with eyes closed.
