One of my regular stops in late May and early June is Big Egg Marsh, a wonderful salt marsh just a short distance south of the much-more-famous Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. It is a great spot for Horseshoe Crabs to spawn and lay eggs so it is no wonder that shorebirds congregate to eat those eggs.
Besides the avian attributes of flight, feathers and laying eggs, potoos are quite possibly the most unbird-like birds in the world. A Northern Potoo by Nick Athanas Northern Potoos are found from Mexico to Costa Rica and on the islands of Jamaica and Hispaniola. In reality though, this is actually a pretty stellar nesting strategy.
Late Saturday afternoon a Tundra Swan was reported from the south end of the East Pond at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. and a visit to Big Egg Marsh (one year bird!) done I headed over to Jamaica Bay. Once I got my trip out to Breezy Point (four year birds!)
Fortunately for me, a kind birder pointed out a ruby-throat in the process of building a nest at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge last week and the nest is relatively low and unobstructed.
I started the day at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge hoping for rails (I heard and saw none) and then made my way to Strack Pond on the western end of Forest Park where I was pleased to find White-crowned Sparrows and a Solitary Sandpiper. Before we get into the photographic story of the day I will briefly outline my route and a few highlights.
I started at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge pre-dawn to pick up American Woodcock and then headed to the coast to see if there was any flight happening. From there I went back to Jamaica Bay where I was treated to a tanager, grosbeak, and wood-warbler show in the North Gardens. This one was at Edgemere Landfill. What was my route?
We nailed down a few lifers for Ivy, the best of which was Yellow-crowned Night-heron at Big Egg Marsh, which we don’t ever see upstate. Saturday morning, Corey got out birding at Jamaica Bay without me and Ivy and was very pleased to find a pair of American Avocets at the north end of the East Pond there.
This past Friday, after leaving Cupsogue where my twitch for the Wilson’s Plover had ended in success I decided to head back over to Big Egg Marsh in my home borough of Queens to see if I could rediscover the Burrowing Owl I had seen the previous evening could be rediscovered. That individual was also at Jamaica Bay.)
So on Sunday morning he looked at Big Egg Marsh, which has a larger amount of saltmarsh habitat. He didn’t find a Nelson’s so he gave up and went to the East Pond at Jamaica Bay where he hoped to find some late shorebirds.
The text describes the species’ appearance, including plumages and molts, habitats, migration patterns, feeding behavior, courtship and breeding behaviors, nest and egg information, subspecies, and population data. I first got a glimpse of it back in August 2023, when Kevin did a presentation at the Jamaica Bay Shorebird Festival.
White Ibis – A pair of young was spotted in Queens a couple of years ago and it is just a matter of time before another shows up at Jamaica Bay. 318 – Burrowing Owl , 16 May 2019: An unbelievable find and a thrilling chase, this bird at Big Egg Marsh was as as astonishing as it was unpredicted. 4 out of 5!). 4 out of 6!).
It is startling to realize that the predators who flush the shorebirds every summer at Jamaica Bay NWR were once in danger of disappearing. * Unfortunately, the Hawaiian diacritical character required to spell ‘Alala and Malama correctly cannot be inserted into this version of WordPress.

As I watched, it slowly moved into a patch of dried vegetation and I noticed that it was settling over a single egg. Two or three eggs may be laid and either bird may incubate. Sondra Mar 22nd, 2011 at 6:29 pm AN excellent series and how COOL to see the egg–chicks will soon be in the picture! I am around to learn more.
