Banded Semipalmated Sandpipers at Big Egg Marsh, Queens, New York

One of my regular stops in late May and early June is Big Egg Marsh, a wonderful salt marsh just a short distance south of the much-more-famous Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. It is a great spot for Horseshoe Crabs to spawn and lay eggs so it is no wonder that shorebirds congregate to eat those eggs.

Tundra Swan at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge

Late Saturday afternoon a Tundra Swan was reported from the south end of the East Pond at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. and a visit to Big Egg Marsh (one year bird!) done I headed over to Jamaica Bay. Once I got my trip out to Breezy Point (four year birds!)

Another (Almost) Big Day in Queens

Queens Big Day (Kind of)

I started at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge pre-dawn to pick up American Woodcock and then headed to the coast to see if there was any flight happening. From there I went back to Jamaica Bay where I was treated to a tanager, grosbeak, and wood-warbler show in the North Gardens. This one was at Edgemere Landfill. What was my route?
