One of my regular stops in late May and early June is Big Egg Marsh, a wonderful salt marsh just a short distance south of the much-more-famous Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. It is a great spot for Horseshoe Crabs to spawn and lay eggs so it is no wonder that shorebirds congregate to eat those eggs.

Late Saturday afternoon a Tundra Swan was reported from the south end of the East Pond at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. and a visit to Big Egg Marsh (one year bird!) done I headed over to Jamaica Bay. Once I got my trip out to Breezy Point (four year birds!)

Besides the avian attributes of flight, feathers and laying eggs, potoos are quite possibly the most unbird-like birds in the world. A Northern Potoo by Nick Athanas Northern Potoos are found from Mexico to Costa Rica and on the islands of Jamaica and Hispaniola. In reality though, this is actually a pretty stellar nesting strategy.

I started the day at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge hoping for rails (I heard and saw none) and then made my way to Strack Pond on the western end of Forest Park where I was pleased to find White-crowned Sparrows and a Solitary Sandpiper. Before we get into the photographic story of the day I will briefly outline my route and a few highlights.

Fortunately for me, a kind birder pointed out a ruby-throat in the process of building a nest at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge last week and the nest is relatively low and unobstructed.

I started at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge pre-dawn to pick up American Woodcock and then headed to the coast to see if there was any flight happening. From there I went back to Jamaica Bay where I was treated to a tanager, grosbeak, and wood-warbler show in the North Gardens. This one was at Edgemere Landfill. What was my route?
