The early threats of guano harvesting and egg collecting have been replaced by the more ominous threats of oil pollution and overfishing of their favorite food source – pilchards. On the mainland they face predation from domestic cats, dogs, genets, mongoose and Cape Gulls which steal their chicks and eggs.

Okay, they weren’t as fascinating as the birds of prey eating their, or the frankly still weird drawings of nightjars carrying eggs and woodcocks carrying chicks, but still, hornbills were cool because they sealed their mates up in holes in trees and then fed them as they raised the chick.

Oriental Pied Hornbills are quite strange in their nesting habits, because the female bird is sealed into a tree trunk during the incubation of the eggs. She was sealed in on the day we arrived in Singapore and she was still sealed in on the day we left three weeks later.
