Why can’t a baby bird just hatch out of the egg and fly away, or at least, be able to fly a little and not require weeks of constant feeding and attention? Baby turtles and crocodiles are born as miniature versions of adults. Some birds do this a little. That is a signal that always says “I’m hungry feed me NAO!”

Oil begins to wash up on the beaches throughout May and June of 2010 May 6, 2010 Oil washes ashore on the Chandeleur Islands off the Louisiana coast, an important nesting and breeding area for many bird species. Officials reported 48 marine mammals, mostly dolphins, and 87 dead sea turtles during the first two months alone.

Some 320 species have been recorded here, and in springtime it is possible to observe more than 150 bird species in a week. Due to heavy rains many clutches of Great Crested Grebes had failed, but we observed both nests with eggs (and left the area immediately) and adults with chicks, some of them piggy-backing their mothers.

The adults of most species will still care for the chicks no matter how much you touch them. Sometimes females have eggs to lay but no nest and the eggs can end up anywhere from other duck and goose nests…there was even a case in Minnesota where a Canada Goose laid an egg in an Osprey nest and the raptors incubated and hatched it !

For the most part, this largest of the five frigatebird species actually is, but only to the other costal birds out looking for a meal. Besides their piratical nature, they skim the surface of the water and use their strongly hooked bill to grab small fish, squid, baby turtles and in some locations, sea iguanas.

As a result, I had 15 species in the first hour. Laight has recorded some 100 species here, including Slavonian (Horned) Grebe and Red-rumped Swallow (the first is a rare migrant/wintering species only, while the second one is an uncommon breeder). Other herons, egrets, gulls and terns are a surprise at this time of the year.
