Pied Oystercatcher breeding area-July to October Pied Oystercatcher sitting on eggs-July We are now at the time of year when Flatback Turtles come ashore to lay their eggs along our coastline and they usually do it during the night around high tide. Apparently the eggs were laid and she finally returned to the sea at 7pm.
Feral cats are a huge problem in Australia and they do take a lot of the eggs. There are four pairs with eggs currently after the first pair lost their eggs, which they laid in the same location as last year. This pair laid a white egg last year on their second attempt in the exact same nest.
Why can’t a baby bird just hatch out of the egg and fly away, or at least, be able to fly a little and not require weeks of constant feeding and attention? Baby turtles and crocodiles are born as miniature versions of adults. Some birds do this a little. That is an oversimplification of what happens.
Officials reported 48 marine mammals, mostly dolphins, and 87 dead sea turtles during the first two months alone. We documented the relocation of several turtle nests. The babies that hatched from these eggs were released on Florida’s east coast. Turtles continue to die at significant rates in the Gulf of Mexico.
The Pied Oystercatcher pairs are all in their breeding territories and we can expect to find eggs laid in the first week of July along the coast here. They are a lot more successful than the Pied Oystercatchers at breeding, but their eggs and chicks are somewhat smaller and appear to be less attractive to predators. Hawksbill Turtle.
This is the time of year when the Pied Oystercatchers breed and already three of the sixteen pairs along this stretch of beach have successfully laid eggs. The first pair to lay eggs this season have only a few more days of sitting and then they will be very busy guarding their chicks from predators.
The northern half of the lake added Corn Bunting , European Turtle Dove , Dalmatian Pelican , Purple Heron , Eurasian Hobby , Eurasian Golden Oriole , Eurasian Green Woodpecker , and only the first of the several Masked Shrikes of the tour (cover photo by Kostas Papadopoulos).
Erin Smithies-Baker’s colleague Lisa Kelly took in two box turtles a woman had kept for years, feeding them nothing but spaghetti and meatballs. And scrambled eggs,” added Hilary Lewis. “I “Instead of bringing them to another rehabber, like I told her, she kept them and fed them spaghetti – because noodles look like worms.
Besides their piratical nature, they skim the surface of the water and use their strongly hooked bill to grab small fish, squid, baby turtles and in some locations, sea iguanas. Each pair will only lay one egg, and once it is hatched, are some of the most devoted parents in the bird world.
In Nicaragua, the army patrols beaches to protect sea turtleeggs. In some parts of Africa, rangers receive military training and equipment to defend animals (and themselves) from poachers in pursuit of elephants, rhinos, gorillas, and other endangered species. But now there is increasing talk of more far-reaching action.
The biggest surprise are two Whiskered Terns, common lowland breeding birds that require ponds to lay their eggs on floating leaves of waterlilies. These do not exist at the dam, but are possible in local rivers (yet, breeding there is unlikely because of changeable water levels) or in some extraction pit at the nearby coal mine.
Speaking of pregnant snakes, do sea snakes lay their eggs ashore like sea turtles or do they keep them internally until the young are ready to hatch/ be born, like some sharks? These do lay eggs on land and are (reasonably) mobile once they hit the beach. It seems like there is great diversity in this continent.
This was a gigantic project, way beyond just creating ways to protect cahow burrows from longtails (which Wingate also did, by creating baffles), and Gehrman takes us through many of Wingate’s struggles to bring back trees and mollusks and turtles and herons and fresh water pond life that no longer existed in Bermuda.

These fossils are seen as proof that some dinosaurs brooded over its eggs. “Feathery forearms would have allowed these emu-sized dinosaurs to shade their eggs from the head of the midday sun 80 million years ago” (right, Dinoguy2/Wikimedia). Like birds. The book begins with the discovery of Archaeopteryx in Germany in 1861.
Sometimes females have eggs to lay but no nest and the eggs can end up anywhere from other duck and goose nests…there was even a case in Minnesota where a Canada Goose laid an egg in an Osprey nest and the raptors incubated and hatched it ! Try to get it too another family group or contact a wildlife rehabber.
” I wonder if the rules of the European Song Contest could also be adapted, with the worst performers being turned into birds or maybe turtles. Chloris was one of the daughters of Pierus, who, having failed to best the Muses in a singing contest, was transformed into a finch.”
Turtles are the reptile everybody loves. Birders are always happy to see a turtle or tortoise, and there are times of the year when my social media feeds are sprinkled with photos of turtles beings removed from roads or crawling to land to lay eggs. Or that tortoises and terrapins are considered part of the turtle family.
Indeed, most cuckoo eggs are accepted by the babax ( source ), although a small proportion of hosts reject cuckoo eggs and often boast about this capability when having a few too many drinks. Ditto Oriental Turtle Dove. The Chinese Babax is a laughingthrush, as is Elliot’s Laughingthrush. Force of habit, I guess.
It also protects nesting turtles, which nest later in the year. The vehicle access is closed around the biggest high tides when the turtles are nesting to protect them and their nest sites. We have to hope that vehicles stop driving beyond the high tide mark and that the eggs hatch out in twenty eight days’ time.
Of the dozen gifts mentioned in the Christmas carol “The Twelve Days of Christmas,” seven are birds: the seven swans a-swimming, six geese a-laying, four calling birds, three French hens, two turtle doves, and – of course – a partridge in a pear tree.

I had spent several holidays with my family in the USA in the 1980′s and then worked in Maine during the summer of 1985-beware the poison ivy and the snapping turtles! It made us reach for our field guide for North America, but that really does not compare to the real thing.

Fortunately for the buntings, they seem to detect most cuckoo eggs smuggled in (75% in one study). A study found that for Plain Prinia , egg characteristics in a mainland China location with many cuckoos make it much easier to spot cuckoo eggs than in a Taiwan location with few cuckoos ( source ). Better safe than sorry.
