Lady, believed to be the oldest living Osprey in the UnitedKingdom, has laid her 62nd egg. It is her 22nd year nesting at the Scottish Wildlife Trust’s Loch of the Lowes reserve in Perthshire. Hat-tip to Redgannet.
Its first flight will take it from its burrow, usually on the west coast of the UnitedKingdom, to the coast of South America, an extraordinary journey for an unaccompanied minor. After mating, a single egg is laid and incubation duties are shared by both parents. While one bird sits, its mate feeds out at sea for a week or so.
All other cuckoos lay their eggs in other birds’ nests and let them raise them. I have also been watching with interest the return of the Cuckoo to the UnitedKingdom from Africa over the past few days. The Eastern Koel has only been recorded in Broome on very rare occasions.
It didn’t occur to me till I started reading The Falcon Thief: A True Tale of Adventure, Treachery, and the Hunt for the Perfect Bird that there was also a possible threat to the eagle herself: poachers, who steal raptor eggs and chicks. And, some background on those laws, both in the UnitedKingdom and the United States.
2012 has certainly been a bumper year for me with an estimated year list of around 3,000 species after extensive travels to South Africa, Ethiopia, South Korea, Indonesia, the Russian Far East, UnitedKingdom, Peru, Guatemala and Panama. Red Junglefowl by Mike Bergin Clare Kines chose an egg as his Best Bird of the Year.
