There was a lot of hunting for Bald Eagles—it is traditionally a game species. Yes, they have been an endangered species for as long as most of us can recall, but remember, they were traditionally a hunted species. Bald Eagles will provide a sporting challenge for hunters. Hunters don’t even need to use decoys.

Activities such as hunting, fishing, and trapping are categorized as “consumptive” uses. In contrast, consumptive uses were minor: fishing accounted for 10 percent and hunting was just 4 percent.

The forests are home to Kalij Pheasants , Crested Tree Swifts , Ashy Wood Swallows , owlets, woodpeckers, spider hunters, barbets and bulbuls, laughingthrushes and hornbills. On our last visit to the grasslands of Manas we saw not one but two endangered Bengal Floricans in fifteen minutes, with a Pied Falconet thrown in for good measure!

Hunters go to Africa to shoot lions, and this is without question a good thing; for birds, for ecosystems, and for lions in general! I guess the natural question is… how does some hunter from the US help in the conservation of the lion? Hunters are prepared to spend a lot of money for the privilege of shooting a lion.

But as far as I can tell, nobody advocates for birders, so lands are opened to hunting and fishing , but not birding, photography, and other non-consumptive uses.
