The forests are home to Kalij Pheasants , Crested Tree Swifts , Ashy Wood Swallows , owlets, woodpeckers, spider hunters, barbets and bulbuls, laughingthrushes and hornbills. On our last visit to the grasslands of Manas we saw not one but two endangered Bengal Floricans in fifteen minutes, with a Pied Falconet thrown in for good measure!

Here are some of the questions that were running through my mind as I read Owls of the Eastern Ice: A Quest to Find and Save the World’s Largest Owl : (a) Is ornithological research always this dangerous? (b) The fish owl is Jonathan Slaght’s grail and also, more prosaically, his dissertation topic.

So, one might surmise, it’s OK if they get shot by hunters thinking they’re sandhill cranes? What could motivate gunmen (I cannot call them hunters) in two states to deliberately kill North America’s tallest and most critically endangered bird? It may be as sick as deliberately targeting an endangered species for death.

We actually spent considerable time searching unsuccessfully for this highly sought-after bird; however I did suspect they were not gone, as several hunters I interviewed knew the bird and claimed it still existed. The rare Rufous Fishing Owl was one of the many species seen by the group here. million hectares in 2007.

Apparently, in Japan some bird watchers do not particularly like bulbuls as they scare the other species away – here, being a single individual, this bulbul did not dare to bully any other species. ” Unfortunately, they never seem to call when in Nanhui, and they are indeed difficult to spot.
