On our last visit to the grasslands of Manas we saw not one but two endangered Bengal Floricans in fifteen minutes, with a Pied Falconet thrown in for good measure! Commoner species include Bar-headed Geese , parakeets, shrikes, mynas and minivets. You should also see Gharial and Mugger Crocodiles there.

The hunting and selling of ortolans, which have suffered a Europe-wide decline of 40-50% in the last 40 years, has been illegal in France since 1999. During the hunting season, which lasts from mid-August until the end of September, the birds are taken from their cages, fattened up in the dark and then drowned alive in Armagnac.

One thing you must do is hire a local guide, as while you can hunt for yourself you’ll see a hell of a lot more with one. It’s pretty easy to access as an independent birder from the airport there, although you may want sat-nav if you are by yourself, and watch out for roadworks. It was also weirdly good for quail, of sorts.
