I didn’t know what species of woodpecker it was, but I knew it was just in the clearing on the other side of the road. Thanks to the Endangered Species Act and a successful reintroduction program in which NWF played a major role, the wolf is thriving again in the Yellowstone and Great Lakes areas. My best bird of the year is based on the sighting rather than the species. It occurs to me that I never delivered on my promised update once I received the detailed ring information. Only trouble is, which of the seven species I saw this year do I pick? Rock Warbler by Clare Morton. Redgannet picked a real stunner.

FWS evidently objected to this proposal, noting the proximity to the refuge and the area’s importance as a migratory corridor for many species of birds.
