There are times when acting in the conservation interest of a species or ecosystem means that the welfare of specific animals is compromised, which is a fancy way of saying that conservationists sometimes have to kill animals for the greater good. You protect an entire ecosystem that holds 350 bird species.

The female was killed but experts suggest the male will survive, although perhaps without the ability to fly. Please get our endangered species out of your sights, and shoot something else. As if the last month’s revelation of a pair of murdered Whooping Cranes wasn’t devastating enough, the bad news just keeps on coming.

The Northern Spotted Owl is a “ threatened ” species under the U.S. Endangered Species Act and it was famously the subject of extensive and protracted litigation in the late 1980s and early 1990s, mostly relating to forestry management plans in the Pacific Northwest. LEXIS 93734 (D. July 16, 2015).

We are facing a plague of poaching that is again decimating the species. In Africa, one elephant is being killed every 15 minutes. But the “illegal international trade” is already there, killing – among other places – in Kruger (S. Another ellie is being killed as you read this line. One may say so. Perhaps 15 minutes?

Their numbers have declined so rapidly that a paltry 10 percent of the pre-20th century population remains (read Adam Riley’s post on Africa’s endangered species ). In recent years on two subsequent December nights, this single leopard killed 65 penguins, only feasting on a small percentage of the carcasses.
