I’m sure most of you know that the Peregrine Falcon became an endangered species because of the use of organochlorine pesticides, especially DDT, during the 1950′s, 60′s, and 70′s. Even our local Greater Sage Grouse , which now are receiving a huge effort at habitat protection, and restoration, were just those really cool birds out in the desert. Now that I am here in Mexico, I finally found them! There is little doubt about the serious nature of the threat to this bird.

The Horned Guan is not just one of, if not THE standout birds of Mexico and Guatemala, but of the entire world. It is an ancient species, restricted to a tiny range, difficult to access, difficult to find, but once found incredibly unique and striking. The majestic gray wolf once roamed the United States from coast to coast and from Mexico to Canada. Thanks to the Endangered Species Act and a successful reintroduction program in which NWF played a major role, the wolf is thriving again in the Yellowstone and Great Lakes areas. Some ways to help this incredible bird include supporting the Macaw Recovery Network , any efforts to protect and reforest habitat from eastern Honduras to eastern Panama and northern Colombia, and never buying a Great Green Macaw. Don’t be surprised if you don’t find this species in your field guide.
