While I often tease Corey about how many albatrosses we have down here in New Zealand, the fact is that the United States has three species of Albatross that breed within its boundaries, albeit one of them only very rarely, and visit the western shores of North America. One of the two species found on Tern Island is the Laysan Albatross.
The name Peregrine means “wanderer,” and northern-nesting Peregrines are among North America’s long-distance migratory species, some moving 25,000 kilometers every year. They were officially listed as Endangered in 1970 in the U.S. Peregrine Falcon at Delevan National Wildlife Refuge.
Note the long yellow gape, a characteristic field mark of this species. Ferruginous Hawks were petitioned for listing under the federal EndangeredSpecies Act in 1991 but rejected; currently they are listed as a Category 2 Species by the U.S. They are listed as vulnerable in Canada.
