The landbird community on Santa Cruz is a strange mix; Northern Saw-whet Owls , Grasshopper Sparrows , Merlins , Black-headed Grosbeaks , Hooded Orioles , Common Poorwills , Horned Larks are a few of the species found here. This is the Santa Cruz Island Rufous-crowned Sparrow , a subspecies endemic to Santa Cruz and Anacapa Islands.

I was fortunate to rack up a number of lifers in 2013, both at home and abroad ( Varied Thrush in Washington, Brewer’s Blackbirds in California, Burrowing Owl in the Nevada desert). Larry adds our second owl species to this list of stellar birds. It was a race between the Snowy Plover and the Spotted Owl.

It will never occur this far south but thanks to the Endangered Species Act and recovery efforts, at least they an excellent chance of seeing Bald Eagles if they venture way north of Costa Rica.
