If you like animals you will generally not want them to suffer and you won’t want them to go extinct. Animal rights is concerned with preventing the suffering or even use of animals by humans. Wildlife conservation is concerned with protecting wildlife at the level of species or perhaps population.

Small numbers of this endangered species wander in the Caribbean lowlands and foothills in search of seeding “Mountain Almond” and other trees. At least the tree is not found on their property and this probably gives it some protection. They don’t like the leaves and detritus that gathers below the tree.

An African Penguin peers protectively around its fluffy chick. Their numbers have declined so rapidly that a paltry 10 percent of the pre-20th century population remains (read Adam Riley’s post on Africa’s endangered species ). And I recently returned to my home-town to get reacquainted with these little beauties.

I’m sure most of you know that the Peregrine Falcon became an endangered species because of the use of organochlorine pesticides, especially DDT, during the 1950′s, 60′s, and 70′s. They were officially listed as Endangered in 1970 in the U.S. Peregrine Falcon at Delevan National Wildlife Refuge.

These are the critically endangered birds of Costa Rica. Yellow-naped Parrot (Amazona auropalliata).

If birders are willing to spend so much money in the pursuit of birds, it seems some would be willing to spend some on protecting them as well…right? They have suffered from competition with Blue-winged Warblers (including hybridizing), forest succession, and parasitism by Brown-headed Cowbirds. Shocking, I know.
