In 1806, Lewis and Clark saw condors near the Columbia River, which makes up much of the Washington-Oregon border. One management tool used by FWS is reintroduction of an endangered species into its former range. But that does not necessarily mean there are no protections. In fact, the overwhelming majority of federal land is in just 11 western states (Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming). Several endangered species are (or have been) highly dependent on specific tracts of federal land.

The Cuban Sandhill Crane , Grus canadensis nesiotes and the Mississippi Sandhill Crane , Grus canadensis pulla are listed as endangered species. “You don’t want them to go extinct, so we want to protect them. Sandhill Cranes fly south for the winter and in their wintering areas they form flocks of over 10,000 birds.
