They are often seen on the ground since their prey consists mainly of rabbit, prairie dog and, you guessed it, ground squirrel. Note the long yellow gape, a characteristic field mark of this species. The initial solution was translocation, but there were a limited amount of islands on which you could place species without mammals being a problem, and they were only very small islands. The other obvious solution was to make more predator-free islands. But while obvious this was also a much harder proposition.

The initial solution in New Zealand was to move species to islands where mammals hadn’t reached. This technique achieved a temporary respite for some critically endangered species, but there is a real shortage of islands around New Zealand with no mammals whatsoever.

It was advisable to remove them at night, to keep them calm, to establish immediately a feeding board on which they would be fed chopped beef and egg to start, then fresh birds, rabbit or squirrel. Except for the falconer’s jesses and bell, they were to be allowed freedom to pursue life in the wild, life with minimal human contact.

There are conservation efforts to save these species by individual aquarists, who are keeping and breeding them in hopes that they can someday be reintroduced into the lake. I intend to stick with rescuing rabbits from now on.) I'd really like to get your opinion on this.
