Like my two previous visits I spent one day that I didn’t have to lead any field trips doing a run through central Florida looking for some of the specialty species of the region. The list includes Bachmann’s Sparrow , Red-cockaded Woodpecker , Crested Caracara , Snail Kite , and, oddly, Whooping Crane.
The Channel Islands have all sorts of species and subspecies that are endemic to the islands, including mammals, reptiles, plants, and of course birds, many of which are nonmigratory. This is the Santa Cruz Island Rufous-crowned Sparrow , a subspecies endemic to Santa Cruz and Anacapa Islands.

The list of most-threatened birds continues; all of these birds could lose more than 99 percent of their current range in at least one season by 2080: Baird’s Sparrow. … Conservation Audubon endangeredspecies Extinction Week longspurs science' I’ve discussed Chestnut-collared Longspur at some length already.
Way back on the first day of March, Doug, who is a good birder and a decent guy despite his Brooklyn roots, and I were exploring Plum Beach, a location you will recall from the absurdly cooperative Clapper Rails and Nelson’s Sparrows that I digiscoped last year.
A serious world mega and even more so because this species is truly scarce and without a doubt, truly endangered. Another endangeredspecies, this lovely snow-white bird with the yellow bill needs rainforest adjacent to mangroves in southern Costa Rica and adjacent western Panama. Cabanis’s Ground-Sparrow.
The American Birding Association Field Guide to Birds of Ontario covers 311 species (publicity material says 310, probably because Alder and Willow Flycatchers share one page), birds that author Chris Earley says, “are seen in the province most regularly” (p. 2012), and (4) Waterfowl of Eastern North America, 2nd ed.
This critically endangeredspecies was presumed extinct for over 100 years, and was not discovered again until pelagic trips (run by the same people as mine) began chumming to attract other seabirds. I did see a Greater-striped Swallow and a host of Capes – a Cape Sparrow , Cape Canary and best of all a Cape Longclaw.
