It may be as sick as deliberately targeting an endangered species for death. So we can squawk at the state wildlife departments all we want, but the USFWS has the final say.

To protect this woodpecker and the post-fire ecosystems it depends on throughout California, in September 2010 the Center for Biological Diversity and the John Muir Project petitioned to list the bird under the California Endangered Species Act, earning it “candidate” status in the state, which does offer some protections for the bird.

Strangely, the usually fairly accurate eBird description also fails to mention the beautiful blue around the eyes of the species: “Dark rufous above and grayish-white below, with a silver ear patch, bright white throat, and a black patch around the eye.” I wonder why. We soon were close to the Mokohinau Islands , one of the many islands in the area that serve as wildlife refuges. This critically endangered species was presumed extinct for over 100 years, and was not discovered again until pelagic trips (run by the same people as mine) began chumming to attract other seabirds. Wicked, right?
