These 15 endemics and nearly 40 near-endemics (many of which were endemics until Eritrea gained independence from Ethiopia in 1991) are for the most part quite easily observed on the standard Ethiopian birding circuit. Several lodges have subsequently opened and a surfaced road is being built to allow easier access to the valley.
